The grate surface of the chain-type grate is actually the chain belt itself, driven by sprockets that slowly move the grate bars forward. Typically made from cast iron, the grate bars are assembled with carefully maintained ventilation gaps between each bar. Additionally, adjustable air-control chambers are often installed beneath the grate to regulate airflow, allowing air to pass through these gaps and reach the fuel layer for combustion. Coal is evenly fed onto the grate from a coal hopper located at the front end, and the thickness of the coal layer can be adjusted by raising or lowering a coal gate. As the grate moves backward, the coal gradually ignites, burns, and eventually burns completely. Finally, the ash and slag left behind are removed either manually or mechanically. In some systems, instead of using a coal hopper, a coal-spreading machine is employed to throw coal onto the rear section of the grate, which then moves forward. The speed of the grate is precisely controlled by a gear-driven variable-speed mechanism, tailored to suit different types of coal and varying boiler loads.
